Streamlined Research Onboarding Experience

How I designed an interactive onboarding walkthrough which reduced user training time and decreased follow up questions from users.

The Challenge

Our research app has many capabilities, but new users struggle to understand how to take advantage of these features and how to collect the best data possible. Without proper guidance, researchers often collected poor quality data and couldn’t understand the issues they were having.

Lengthy training

Internal employees would have a 2+ hour training session with the researchers.

Poor data collection

Many researchers collected poor quality data due to issues related to wearing the device improperly.

Hand-holding users

Internal employees would spend a lot of time helping researchers analyze data or problem solve issues.

Low success rate

When researchers don’t know how to collect good data, they are less likely to keep up data collection.

The Process

A user-centered approach combining behavioral psychology, competitor research, and iterative design.

Behavioral Psychology

Identified user pain points, created an information hierarchy template, and researched best-practices for tutorials.

Competitor Research

I researched different companies who have thorough onboarding tutorials including Mudra and Muse.

Iterative Design

I worked on designs and consulted with the Chief Product Officer and coworkers for feedback until we were happy with the solution.

User Interviews

The Solution

A comprehensive onboarding system focused on progressive learning, contextual guidance, and explaining the technology.

Reflection

The new onboarding drastically improved user success rates, transforming how users adopt and utilize our tool to support their research.
